Mummification is not a rare art. Many cultures have developed the art of mummifying dead human bodies. The ancient Egyptians were the first ones describing the way how it is done. But mummies have been found on all continents, mainly in dry areas of the Americas and Asia. The oldest mummies found in North America were dated at more than 9,400 years in the past. As the beginning of mummification in Egypt is not well known, Ripley’s claim “2000 years before the ancient Egyptians” is not accurately interpretable, but the oldest dated are from about 3000 BC. So the oldest North American mummies are also much older than the ones known from Egypt, and they are much older than the mummies of the Chinchorro as well. However, that doesn’t say anything about the techniques and the quality of the mummification.
