Our dog is good natured, very people oriented. She loves to go to the groomer. She pulls on the leash all the way from the car to the door and inside to the check in desk. They say that she is the best behaved dog of all their clients. Last time, when they were done, she hopped off the platform and ran over to the cage and sat in it without any prompting. She is acts the same way at the vet, pulling to the door and front desk. Likes to meet other people and dogs.
I have an outside cat and getting him to the vet is a miracle. After the last time, he doesn’t come near me much any more, very skittish. I guess he didn’t like the 3 shots he got.
Farley doesn’t know what’s coming. His only association with brushing comes from the painful brushing Elly does. I expect he will find like Elizabeth did that other person’s brushing is considerably gentler.
My dogs love their groomer so much (she always has treats for them) that they get excited if we even drive near the place. And just about drag me into the shop when we do go.
I’ve always groomed my dogs, at home. The only exception, was the time that my St. Bernard and her daughter got sprayed by a skunk, the same day my parents were coming for a visit.
I called a groomer and asked if the “deskunked” large dogs. I didn’t ask the price – I didn’t care ! I piled the sorry smelling dogs in the back of my pickup and drove them to the groomers.
When the groomers got through with them, you’d never have known that they’d tangled with the business end of a skunk.
Friend told me to go to the park first, so I tried it the last time we had a visit. I wore her out or she wore me out and then she was very docile at the vet.
City dogs have it easy. Country dogs stay outside, so smell isn’t a factor. We had a dog that was good working with pigs – until the day he decided to go walking with tail up in the air and – walk under an electric fence! (Didn’t want anything to do with pigs after that!)
The Chi I walk is certain that the bank and post office are the vet’s office, and refuses to step inside. I have to carry her. Is it the dinging doors or maybe the commercial cleaner on the floor that has a certain vet office smell?

Somehow, they (dogs and cats) always seem to know!

That’s why I like small dogs. I just pick our Westie up, tuck him under my arms and away we go.

Probably the only times she speaks nicely to him are bad ones like vet trips, baths, etc.

At least he didn’t have to “go to the vet to get tutored”.
