I wish the U.S. would catch up with the rest of the world and switch to the metric system. There was an attempt made in the 1970’s, but it failed. Its lasting legacy today is the two-liter soda bottle.
Metric is easier to use to be sure, but we are culturally tied to the English measuring system… I remember the push back in the 70s to move to the metric system, but it just didn’t catch on here… but it did make inroads in a lot of places, like fasteners on cars, the 2-liter soda bottle, and how car engine displacement is now done in liters and not cubic inches…
Not sure about that ton-of-manure" statistic, but things were pretty nasty before the Pure Food & Drug Act, the FDA, & the USDA…I still remember reading Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle for the first time when I was in high school. GROSS!!!
and let’s NEVER go to metric! America has done well without the rest of the world’s influence – and the world wouldn’t be living as well as it is without America’s influence!

In November 2018 a court rule that adding a second polling place for the 13,000+ voters in Dodge City KS would cause more confusion than it fixed.

x_Tech…. one of those things you have to believe but wish you did NOT.
Z51… “simple” maybe…. but I’m hoping you’re just a little off.
It doesn’t say in the strip that the residents ate a ton of manure “apiece.”
As you note. that would be pretty impossible!
I looked up the population history of Indianapolis…. two sites gave a figure of close to 170,000 people in 1900.
2000 pounds is therefore a bit less than .02 pounds each…..
ie, less than a fifth of an ounce per person.
That amount in 365 days would be barely perceptible even to analysis.
To me, this is just hyperbole…. making a mountain out of a molehill….
I’d bet we all eat an ounce of manure every six years even now.
In fact, I just Googled it….. and read that we each, on average, consume about six pounds of dirt a year….
so if .18 oz of it is manure, it would hardly be noticed.

Why would anyone hide manure in food. Hey maw, have you put the bitty piece of S**T in the roasting chicken?
