It’s the hatred of everything NOT WASP that seems the real problem. Hmm, and even that larger group has internal strife and hatred amongst those with differences.

“The hatred of everything NOT WASP” in this particular case, yes. But the idea of Us vs. Them is hardwired in all of us. It has been a basic survival characteristic since we’ve existed. Us vs. Them starts with fear, and it quickly includes hatred and enmity.

I had relatives who lived through Kristallnacht and escaped to tell about it. Horror. I pray this doesn’t escalate.

@cmxx: That is actually very much an oversimplification. For years, archaeologists assumed each new form of man displaced the last, partly through warfare, partly by out-competing the older version for food and land. But DNA analysis shows that today’s humans have Neanderthal genetic material. So sometimes evolution happened through assimilation, not annihilation. The Nazi philosophy, a total distortion of Darwin, was and remains WRONG

“It wouldn’t have happened if they had armed guards”. Why would any church, mosque, or synagogue, need armed guards in the U.S? I guess to protect themselves from all of the idiot Trump supporters. Trump and his supporters – all a bunch of crazies.

Is HIAS processing refugees from the U.S. yet?

I didn’t even know about HIAS until this slaughter happened. What a sick world when a nutcase goes after such a wonderful organization.

Actually, there’s plenty of evidence that we are a social species, with strong wiring (because very little is “hardwired” in the brain) for empathy (cf. “mirror neurons”) and even idealism. I refuse to accept this kind of viciousness as necessarily typical of humanity. It’s still a tiny percentage.

It’s up the the rest of us to prevent them from getting leverage.
