I grew up being taught to respect police. I’ve found it very difficult to accept how there are cops holding such prejudice against certain groups. Oh, to live in Mayberry again.
I and a coworker worked in an outbuilding on 2nd shift. Someone would always set the alarm for the main building even though they were not supposed to. We would walk in and here the clicking of the alarm box. I got elected to talk to the cops. The hardest part was showing hands without looking guilty.
It’s surprising how often a PITA will let you end the conversation and keep from having to come back for the rest of the night. You just have to be patient and sense when, if you give them time, they will eventually shove you or someone else.
Police departments can be a breeding ground for the social disfunctional, who given authority backed by a gun and a badge, become bully’s or worse. This behavior is only reinforced by their peers and superior officers.
Conversely, there are some very outstanding men and women who are dedicated law enforcement professionals that are exemplars for their fellow officers and to the community.
Unfortunately, we see too much of the former, and the latter don’t get the recognition or respect that they deserve. I applaud Cantu & Castellanos for showing the police in a positive light.
As the Los Angeles Chief of Police said more than half a century ago, “The only problem with the police is that we have to recruit every one of them from the Human Race.”
Early on I was stopped for looking too young to be driving. And I had prematurely grey hair! Another time I was in Bellaire (Houston) the officer had a dog in back. I had already gotten out of my seat belt and he tried to get me to say I wasn’t using mine. I was nice, but adamant. And I calmed my friend at the time from mouthing off to the cop. He let us go. Another time it was late and I was dead tired driving home. I was almost there when 2 bored officers pulled me over. My eyes were red from being awake to long. They tried to get me to say I had been using drugs, which I hadn’t. They eventually let me go. I know one thing in all those cases if I had been black the ending would have been very different.

I too am hoping we see more of the lady. Maybe something like Baldo helping her and the two eventually become friends.

I’m at the point where I wouldn’t even open my door to an armed law enforcement person. It’s scary out here.
