When I lived in NY, just outside of the city limits, it took 2-3 times longer during rush hour(s). When I moved to New Orleans, it was just a little longer & the residents complained about the long commute! Everything is relative. When I was first there I was working for a temp agency & 1 job had a woman who had just moved from a very small town in the midwest – I forget exactly where as it was over 20 years ago. She asked me what I thought of New Orleans & I commented how small it was. Her eyes grew soooo wide as she said small? To her it was huge. We now live in Central Florida near Orlando & Disney. it’s be growing in the 20 years we’re here & the commute is getting really bad. Luckily we’re both retired & most of our travels are within 3 miles & we try to avoid the bad times.
Happy!! For 33 of my working years I lived within 2 blocks of my work. Then 12 years of it I had to drive 10 mile to work. Didn’t need any traffic reports thank God!

Somehow, Portland manages to be almost as snarled, but only 3-4 hours a day, not 7/24.

I enjoy watching the traffic report now, from my bar stool.

Back in the 70s I would drive from Huntington Beach down to El Toro to see a friend. It would take me about 20 minutes.
I worked in Santa Ana in the late 80s. I took surface streets because my drive time was shorter than the freeway. Still took me an hour.
We were down there last year, Crazy scary all the way, what with the “fly-overs” etc.

As a local radio commercial once said — speaking of things you don’t want to do — “Being on the 405 at 4:05.” LOL

Should have thrown a SigAlert in there.
