They may not know exactly what you’re saying but they respond to the tone of voice.

Dogs understand plain English, cats on the other hand can ignore you in ten languages.

If it is of use to them they do seem to recognise certain words that will get them to their desires. We, on the other hand, miss a lot of clues they give us because we aren’t paying attention.

What is this “good kitty” you are speaking of?

I heard a neighbor outside talking to her cat as if it understood her. I told my dog about it and we had a good laugh.

Roscoe’s thinking “whatever you say boss, just give me a treat” ;-)

I am not sure that there is such a thing as a good kitty.

Sure cats understand what you’re saying. They don’t care, but they understand.

Our dog doesn’t speak english, but she understands it pretty well!

My cats understand “dinner” and “wanna treat?” and “get down from there” and their names. I had a dog once that could differentiate between the names of her different toys and fetch the right one out of the basket.

My dog understands our conversations. Well, that’s what she says anyway.

I know, right? My dog thinks it is absurd, too.

If a person’s dog is outside and starts barking don’t we say “Who’s there, boy, what is it?” and if the dog ever answers you will be rich!!!

Said the pot to the kettle.

My mother looked out the window and said to herself, Look at that old man out there talking to himself.

Seems to be a gender thing.. women think cats can understand them.. and men know dogs understand them

And Rosco is thinking, “Yeah, go figure”.

The difference is that one of the two actually cares that they’re being spoken to.
