My cousin and I always were given the same present but different color. Of course, whatever it was, she wanted mine. I finally stood up to her and sand No. That was the end of that!
Depends on their age. My Grand kids are teens and are quite savey about what things cost. Good thing they are both reasonable when they give me their wish lists. They know I don’t have nearly as much to spend as their parents.
My SIL is crazy (on so many levels). Despite the fact that her husband has no income for sometime and will continue same and she does not work and they are in debt we estimate she spent over $1000 for Christmas Day dinner for 2 children and 6 adults – at least of 2 of whom (us) can not eat anything she served. Husband estimated she spent $2000 on the 2 girls combined – she bought 40 game cartridges alone (he counted them) for the 7 year old who is a computer game addict (and hits herself in the head with the game when she loses ) plus other stuff for her and stuff for her older sister. Then their grandmother comes in with at least a dozen gifts for each girl – she used to work at McDonalds at the counter and is now living on her Social Security in someone’s garage with her adult grandson living with her and off her – she definitely cannot afford the stuff.
We spend $25 on each girl (and send $25 checks to my niece (30) and nephew (27) and nephew does not always cash the checks). Younger niece wanted two Barbie mermaid dolls per her mother – opened and tossed aside as if she had never heard of them or asked for them – probably true. Older niece had been asked by husband (by text) what she wanted and we gave her old black and white movies on DVDs and for the first time in either of their lives – she thanked us – neither girl has ever said thank you before.

I would think they’ll notice an imbalance in the candy bags a lot more than an imbalance in the amount of money spent on each of them…

Kids count the number of presents not the amount spent on them.

It’s not about the amount of money spent, it’s about what’s fashionable and “must have”.
