ladyfingers86: take a stress pill… nowhere does the strip say, or imply, or even remotely suggest that John has any problem with Elly going out on the beach in a bikini. Rather, he’s surprised she’s not so self-conscious about her appearance that she’d prefer to go out in long overalls… which has been her behavior in the past.
For me, it also has to do with where we are. If I’m in Europe where everyone is wearing a bikini and no one cares, I’m much less self-conscious than if I’m in the U.S. where catty comments abound. I know, I know, I shouldn’t let it bother me, but I’m pretty self-conscious even though I’m a normal weight (and ironically, a lot of Americans are not).
ladyfingers86 - as puddleglum said, John isn’t saying “don’t do that!” he’s saying “OH my, she’s not trying to hide like she does at our neighbourhood pool.” and thinking “oh oh, lots of men are gonna be staring… and I’m going to be her. Cha ching!”
ladyfinger86: Why are you always such a male-hater?
John is not a male chauvinist pig; with that smile on his face, he is pleasantly surprised his wife is wearing a bikini in public. She is the one who always has a problem with her body image.
My wife looks fantastic in a bikini and my ego is always stoked when I see people appreciating her looks. When people compliment her I can see how that brightens her day.
lightenup, I’m the same way. And for me it helps that I’m almost positive that no one there will recognize me. I do a lot crazier stuff when I’m around strangers than I do back home.
Hey, my wife is trying to lose some weight so she will think she looks better in a bikini, while I think she looks good now. Women are always harder on themselves and other women, then men are, IMHO. Guys do like to look (though we’re smart enough not to when around our wives and girlfriends - duh.) You need to do crazy stuff on vacation - on our first anniversary, we both went to a nude beach - Blacks Beach in San Diego. She went total and totally surprised me with her courage and spontaniety (like John is here.) I’m about back to my wedding weight after 21 years and she is working on hers again, too. Gotta do fun stuff without the kids that you both enjoy. The neighbors and friends are not there to remember this - go a little wild!
Elly hates the way she looks so much that I’m about as surprised as John is that she not only brought a bikini with her on vacation but that she also intends to actually wear it, as well! She’s a lot braver than I would be … even amongst strangers that I’d never, ever, see again!
You’re all talking about how brave Elly is, and ignoring how Lynn Johnson chickened out by having her go into the bathroom to change. Janis, of Arlo and Janis, wouldn’t have needed to do that, and JJ would have simply shown her with her back turned, as he’s done so many times before.
just think … if elly changed in front of john and he got excited … they just might react like married couples do … and get to the beach about 15 minutes later than expected…. 2 minutes to get john undressed and 12 minutes to get dressed again though just in bathing suits.
