In my house, I WAS the dictionary! My mother would be writing a letter in the kitchen, and she’d shout over, “Karen…how do you spell [enter word here]?” The funny thing is, 3 feet away from her, on top of the china cabinet, was a dictionary. Funnier still: she could easily spell “appendectomy” but had trouble with shorter words. Oh, and she & I played Scrabble regularly; I was the only kid who would play against her.
When I was in grade school (many moons ago), I had a “bad speller’s dictionary” that listed words by their most common misspelling, and then told you the correct spelling.

Well, if Charlie Brown were looking for it in the Oxford dictionary, it would probably be spelt G-U-V-apostrophe-N-A-H

Interesting that with spellcheck now, you can mangle a word and still find the correct spelling.

I never tell my students to look up a work if they cannot spell it, for this very reason; and then there are words like pneumonia and knowledge…

If you misspell a word when looking it up, you can never find it.
