Complete and utter boredom.

I was trying to sharpen them, you know, make something useful. Now I’ve just created a useless mess.

and WHY did you eat KALE?

I was trying to rub the bark off so I could check for termites – my favorite food.

It’s really an interesting thought experiment, because we can never actually know. But I think it’s most likely that it was discovered while drilling a hole. We know for sure they drilled shell ornaments. Wood doesn’t survive, but I think it only natural that they would have reason to drill wood. A common method would have been to spin a stick against the object between two hands and use a little sand as abrasive. Seems inevitable that smoke would rise on occasion and eventually result in inspiration.

He was trying to put out the fire.

Maybe he was making music with them.

Their conversation could get heated in a hurry.
