Heavy the head that wears the tiara… even if only symbolically. In 1964, Paul VI removed the tiara from his head, surrendered it on the altar. It was sold and the money given to charity. No pope has worn one since. Francis has gone even farther in rejecting symbols of temporal power. But, heavy the head.
I don’t know what, if anything, this means. It is something that happened.
I am not Catholic. I am a student of belief systems. I have sometimes said my heart is Christian but my brain is Buddhist. I avoid gender specific pronouns when referring to God.
On the day of this pope’s selection, I was watching TV coverage. The cameras showed the curtained windows in the doors to the balcony where the announcement would be made. The curtain moved, but before the doors opened, I said out loud… to an empty room…
“Huh. There’s never been a Pope Francis before.”
The designated cardinal emerged. I speak no Latin but recognized the words “Habemus Papam!” And I figured out the meaning when he concluded with “…Qui sibi nomen imposuit Franciscum.”
I didn’t know then and don’t know now what to make of it.

Incredible commentary. I can’t think of anything to add to it.

I wish him the best of luck. It is not a job I could be convinced to take.

Wonderful cartoon. I wish I could give it more than one Like.

Prayer doesn’t hurt, but it will take hard labour, getting down and dirty, and constant vigilance to make things right.
