It’s better than watching YouTube videos all day.

Maybe my parents were wise not to have a TV. We finally got one when I was 15.

On a related note, can you imagine Calvin in the Internet age? As I recall, the comic got as far as Calvin wanting an “online account” for their computer, and his dad saying it was bad enough they had a telephone.

This was my father in his fifties and sixties. No singer had a voice, according to him, no actor could act their way out of a paper bag, and TV was crap. That didn’t stop him from sitting in front of it several hours a day.

Ah the ’70s! Not that that decade was unusual, just that it was outstandingly dull on the airwaves.

Calvin, when you grow up you have 100 + channels and so called Reality TV to watch which isn’t reality.

Oddly enough, the same complaint is made today. There is enough good stuff on, it is just a matter of finding among all the dross. But even dross, is watched by someone.

I watch local news and the Weather Channel for regular TV. Rest of the time is Curiosity Stream, You Tube, Netflix and Prime.

I haven’t watched regular TV for more than a couple of years, and I don’t feel any sense of loss. Internet (streaming) TV is a God-send – you can watch exactly what you want, when you want, and almost wherever you want!

When I departed for my first permanent military assignment I packed up all my worldly possessions save one in my car (yes, it all fit) and drove off. The one possession I did not bring with me was my TV set. I did without for over a year. I did not miss it.

To this day. I’m not a TV junkie. My favorite network has its own button on the remote: OFF.

It’s next to the Billy Mayes Memorial Button – AKA MUTE.

I replaced door-handles on my Toyota van, learned how to program my sprinkler system (lousy instruction manual), re-learned Linear Algebra from MIT Open Courseware, listened to all of Bob Dylan’s songs a hundred times over, learned what “Waltzing Matilda” is about, found out I never will understand quantum mechanics, mourned John Stewart’s death and re-listened to all his songs, and posted a video of my pal “Pouncer” peeing in the toilet and rolling the toilet paper roll and so far have gotten zero hits, and don’t think I wasted VERY much time. Oh, and I discovered that the Righteous Brothers are actually white. Who knew?
