The July 4th family reunion? All other days of the year, the month comes first. People say “March 11”, “August 24”, “November 4” and so on. But one day a year the day comes first – the “Forth of July”. I’ve never understood why, and I’ve never met anyone whou could explain it, but when I see it here put the other way around (i.e. the same as every other day) it just sounds wrong.
Is that why people keep asking if we’re seeing family on July 4th? We’d take ours to my inlaws for their parade and fireworks but also for the beach access and no one else in the families joined us. Now my kids have celebrations in their own cities at special places and I wouldn’t ask them to skip everything. Any day of the summer works and we’ll try to travel to them. Besides, most can’t skip work Thursday AND Friday, maybe even Wednesday.
Kids, when I was 12, I had to go to a wedding for one of my mother’s friends on the 4th of July. Let me tell you THAT was more miserable than all my family reunions combined. No kids my age, no bbq, and no fireworks and I had to sit in church and the church’s fellowship hall all day.
We used to have an annual family reunion (our father’s side). But, kids started being more active in organized summer activities, such as tennis lessons, basketball lessons, swimming lessons, or extra courses for middle school or high school. So parents would forego the family reunion so the kids could stay on schedule with the summer activities.
Ok, the 4th is my hubby’s birthday & we go an hour away to our best friends house & my son never complains. My birthday is right around Voodoo Fest. My birthday present is the fest. For my hubby it’s our friends house! My son is so great. He stops his world for us & you can’t get any better than that!!

They’re at that age… I loved our family reunions. The eats were incredible. I can still taste that fried chicken and potato salad.

Oooo. THIS coincides with the camping trip over at “Luann.” And during the July 4th weekend too!

Exactly which part of these reunions are fun for Nancy? Definitely not the whining kids (her own)?
