I always believed that dinosaur character was just plain bad for children. How many of today’s loony lefty liberal millennials are its victims? The fact that the actor is no Mr. Rogers is no surprise.
One thing about the Wrigley gum purchase is that it was a set up purchase just to test out the scanner. They wanted to get the smallest thing they could find for the best test of the scanner.
We will probably never know what the first product scanned was from someone that went in to a store and picked up something off the shelf that they wanted to purchase.

other arachnids include scorpions, ticks, and mites (I wonder what was the second product to have its barcode scanned)

The Wrigley’s gum thing is a repeat from some time back on RBION . Besides, some product had to be first.
True about arachnids. Among arachnids are scorpions and ticks, but they are not spiders.

Tantric sex guru, huh? Of all the hobbies to begin, this one seems like too much trouble.
