Don’t worry, if you measure the length of the steps, all you have to do is use the car to retrace the hike and read the mileage counter.

If one walks an hour each day at 3 to 4 mph, what need to count steps? A person with a short stride will add more steps than a person with an extended stride. Thus, while the numbers are not the same, the ‘benefits’ would seem to be, so the step count is neutral. If one simply strolls, is there a substantial physical health benefit or one that is easily cancelled by two hours of tv viewing? Same for the ‘steps’ one accumulates while crossing the kitchen or back and forth to the table or den or the ordinary household activities.

FitBit software is all tied into the internet so:

My fitbit is a fun toy. I do like that it reminds me to get up and move around once an hour especially at work where I might as well work in a coal mine so deep in the bowels of the building I am. So I get up walk to the break room, reboot my brain, readjust my eyes by looking out the window at something further away than my computer screen and get back to my desk almost awake for the next hour.

The other time it was of interest was when I was hiking on the Appalachian Trial, I did 25,000 steps one day (only 8 miles – obviously I was taking a lot shorter step than usual) but burned over 4,000 calories. The following day was a lot easier: only 3,700 calories. We hiked off the trail and had pizza and beer that night: we deserved it.

I think you would be much better off mental health-wise if you just looked around and enjoyed the scenery.

Women have a big advantage when they put their fitbit on before getting dressed, they get credit for all the calories they burn trying on 400 outfits before they pick one.

@po’dawg: I still think the step thing is a waste. The hour/2-4mph walk takes lots of effort, burns calories, increases oxygen in the blood, and pumps the heart rate. Does one need a watch to show that? In addition, the cost of one of those ‘all things to all people’ gadgets would pay for several months membership in many fitness centers. And that’s not considering the reports of erroneous signals showing false ‘heart events.’ Nothing like being scared to take the next step.
