Sadly I have not. Thanks to some sinus operations when I was very young, I don’t remember smelling anything ever. I can however pass a blindfolded, nose plugged taste test of things one is not supposed to be able to tell the difference between without smelling them.
Our sense of smell fascinates me and how it is intimately linked with memory and emotion. Smells are so evocative, the right smell is like the ultimate virtual reality in the way it can transport you fully to a time and place. It has even been shown that smells can alter your perception of time and space, in real time. The smell of coffee transports me to waking up in bed, at my grandparents house over the summer, embraced in all the warm and cozy feelings that grandparents can evoke. The smell of water on hot concrete takes me too summers by the pool, and jumping out of the pool and laying down on hot dry concrete, feeling the heat radiating through me, the steam curling in my nostrils, the sun beating down, and getting up to see the my doppelgänger in posed imprint on the concrete. Oddly enough, the smell of books is very powerful to me, and yet, I can conjure up no specific memory or feeling, which I find strange. Maybe it is just the smell of a promising adventure.
Today’s art reminds me of a well-known ancient Egyptian ostrakon depicting a female acrobat in a very similar pose. You don’t suppose Sister could be secretly looking at very old Dirty Pictures, do you? Shocking, that would be. And so terribly lame!

The books of the dead,
should not be unread
So turn those old pages
And live in past ages.

Totally understandable they would be dead … especially if only read bent over, upside down, and sideways … while walking naked or driving ….

I do from time to time. TV shows where probably all involved are now dead.
