If Janis is anything like my wife (which, from reading this strip for many years, she is) she chips in for the kids all the time while Arlo isn’t looking.
Is that Gus Geevum? I haven’t thought of him in a long time. I had no idea that there was such a close connection between Arlo and Janis and Mutt and Jeff. Live and learn.
My father-in-law was well off too. He kept wanting to give us money. My wife always said “It is YOUR money dad, spend it. We don’t need it.” We really did not need it, we were doing just fine. My wife was an only child, and her dad’s pride and joy.
…my parents still chip in on all their kids from time to time; I gave up fighting it when I realized that my mom, especially, wants to be able to give the kids money and enjoy the feeling, rather than leaving them money after she is dead and gone and not being around to get the satisfaction. When that finally sunk in, I stopped putting up a fight, especially on the little things…I also don’t know what they are giving to my brothers and sisters – it’s mom and dad’s money, therefore none of my business (as long as they aren’t being scammed…)(…and no, NOT by my siblings :))….
Interesting. Gus contributes (most likely due to the greater day-to-day interaction with him due to proximity). Perhaps that will be enough to drive Janis and Arlo to move?
I have one little quip to add. Several years ago my wife and I were giving one of our daughters a ride. From the back seat she asks “When you guys die, can I have your money?” We were a little stunned. It took a second but I answered “Well, we’ll try not to leave you too many bills.” Now she was stunned. She asked “Wait, can that happen?”

I was wondering about Gus, glad to hear he’s still around.

I imagine hearing that the other father is helping financially was a gut punch for Arlo.

Gus probably also feels an obligation to help out since they chose to follow the family business…
