East to West still applies. It’s because of the sideways “S” shape of Panama: some of the Pacific intrudes to the east and some of the Atlantic intrudes to the west. … I always found it strange the Sun moves from left to right across the sky looking from the northern hemisphere but right to left if you look from the southern hemisphere. (And of course it’s the Earth’s rotation that makes the Sun appear to move.)
The Panama item is wrong on two accounts…First Panama isn’t bordering the Atlantic ocean, it is in the Caribbean Sea. Secondly in Canada you can look East from Tlell British Columbia and see the sun rise over the Pacific and look west from Yarmouth Nova Scotia and see the sun set in the Atlantic. (there are more places I just picked a few cities)
Due to the way that land masses and rivers bend it is similar to the Hwy 90 bridge in New Orleans where you cross the Mississippi River. In this area you drive East to go from the East bank of the river to the West bank and drive West to go to the East bank. Here the sun sets on the East bank of the river and rises on the West bank.
As stated it’s incorrect; Panama isn’t the only country. Mexicans on Baja California would see the sun rise over the Pacific (Gulf of California) and those on the west coast of the Yucatán Peninsula would see it set over the Atlantic (Gulf of Mexico).
