The real Lady Godiva was an Anglo-Saxon. She is said to have ridden naked through the streets of Coventry in England. Coventry was heavily bombed in the Second World War so the Germans used “Coventrize” as a verb for heavily bombing somewhere – an alternative word for blitz. Nowadays Coventry is twinned with Dresden in Germany which was heavily bombed by Americans and British at a later stage of the war. Coventry and Dresden became the British and German cities most strongly associated with World War II bomb damaged and this led to them being twinned and becoming symbols of UK/German reconciliation.

Old joke: “I hear Lady Godiva is going to ride down the streets naked!”
“How does she ride?”
“Sidesaddle left.”
“Hooray for our side!”
