I feel for you Elizabeth. I wore glasses from the time I was 18 months old. They were thick. I was called “four eyes” “coke bottle bottoms” “googly eyes” and I still feel bad about it. I wore contacts for about 10 years but developed an eye condition so I couldn’t. 2 years ago I had my cataracts removed. No glasses now! Wish it could have been done 50 years ago. Hold your head high girlfriend.
In the 7th grade, my school had our vision tested. I got a note to take to my folks stating that I needed glasses. I threw it away and didn’t get glasses until my forties.
In John Molloy’s “The Woman’s Dress for Success Book” he says research “indicates that glasses-the right glasses-add weight to a woman’s face and consequently make her look considerably more authoritative.”..plastic or bone frames of moderate size..should match her hair if she is a brunette..blonde or redhead, should be a dark brown. No wire rims.
With 3 kids (grown now) – all needing glasses, and going to all the eye doctors in town, we have found the best place (no kidding) to get glasses is WalMart (not necessairly the eye doctor, just the glasses). Very good frame selection, and when the frames break – WM fixes or replaces them quickly and cheerfully – no questions asked, and no hassle.
I used to hide the fact that I wore glasses when I was a little girl. As a teen I found some frames that I loved and they became part of “my look”. Now, I always have a pair of sunglasses either on my face or up on the top of my head
I’m about the same age as Elizabeth, in the original run of course. And in her high school years (and mine) I distinctly remember thinking that Elizabeth in glasses was HOT. Could have been my hormones.
But also needing glasses (before I got contacts) I can relate that what she needs right now is someone OTHER than her family to tell her how pretty she is in them, and how attractive she WILL be one day in them.
I saw a view of a 3rd or 4th grade classroom on the TV news lately, and nearly every child was wearing glasses. Was that unusual or is that the way it is now?
I know how she feels, at 8 I needed glasses, now 70 years later cataract surgery has removed the need and I can’t easily adapt; so hang in there, kid. LOL
I used to wear glasses to read, then progressed to bifocals/graduated lens. Then I had my cataract surgeries which included a lens implant in my right eye. Now I can read without cheaters.
That’s okay love. You can always take them off for special occasions and swimming. In a few years you can get contacts or lazik and all will be better.

It does take a while to find the frames that match your personality.

Elizabeth? The glasses ARE removable, you know?…. They don’t suture them on.

At least it appears your mom will let you choose your own frames. Mine didn’t. She wanted the cheapest ones and cheap means UGLY.

Eyeglass insurance usually covers most or all of the frames. It’s all the special coatings that cost.

The first time I put on my glasses in 2000, it looked like I was walking in crystal-clear water…

Wearing glasses does give your eyes some protection from minor hazards.
