@pseudonymous, tell your son/daughter that no, they can’t help shovel because it is too dangerous. Best said while doing the roof, but can then apply to the sidewalk as well (danger of pulling a muscle, overexertion, etc).
The nice thing is, after you finally give in and let them try for a bit, they really are careful to avoid the dangers mentioned.
