There is an old Cherokee saying that the days and years of your life are the greatest gifts that you can give to others. I learned that from my grandmother, who was an old Cherokee.
Beautifully done, Amanda. So tender and such a gut-punch, just like it feels in real life. Gotta go wipe my eyes and blow my nose. Hugs to you and Dan.
And she is now, definitely, SuperNinja. Able to fly high above the clouds, flying with her friend, Ginger, and able to see when you are thinking of her. She will instantly fly to your memories and make you smile when you remember the things she did.
I got my Smoke from the Animal Rescue League in Boston — well, more accurately, she chose me there. I was walking past her cage when a little black paw shot out and grabbed my sweater sleeve, and wouldn’t let go. I had to take her home with me! She was my little shadow, my best buddy through a terrible marriage and a painful divorce, a bunch of moves, and a whole lot of changes. She adored my now-husband when we started dating — she let him hold her like a baby and rub her belly! She NEVER let me do that! She was a goofball, and a good kitty sister to our guinea pigs. She died from from the same cancer that your Ninja had, Amanda, so I’m sure she was there waiting to show her all the good napping spots and such.
Oh Amanda – I’m so sorry you and Dan had to go through that. It’s one of the hardest things to have to do in life I believe. Let the one you love so much go in order to let them be out of pain and free. I know this was awhile ago, but you never forget it really. I’m glad you shared this with us.
Wonderfully done, Amanda! I especially like the fourth panel of this strip where Ninja is sitting in Dan’s business. That seems to be a universal among cats, at least the ones I’ve lived with over the years.

My late Mom and I used to imagine our lost loved ones (human, furry, feathery or whatever) in a heavenly garden. Beer~, to be precise.

Thank you for sharing this. Our cats weasel their way into our hearts and stay there, no matter how long it has been since they were with us.

I wonder if Ninja was reincarnated as Ruthie’s Ninja Kitty from “One Big Happy”? (Well, someone had to ask the funny question…!) d;o)
