Wow. Our research department is going to be blushing about DiMaggio in uniform. At least we didn’t have him selling Mr. Coffee.
Keep those nominations and votes coming.
for 2010 my vote is with Tiger Woods. I do not believe that he will ever win again. Or even finish in the top 10. Golf has passed him by, too many young turks coming up.
Bush was a part-owner of the Texas Rangers, and served as managing general partner before he was elected governor. He was famous there for trading Sammy Sosa, which in the long run was probably a good thing.
Steve Pederson, Fired in a five minute meeting from Nebraska after “refusing to let this program gravitate to mediocrity.” It did. Now Pittsburgh AD. Fires football coach Dave Wannstedt. Hires Miami of Ohio coach Mike Haywood to return dignity and ethics to the program. Haywood is fired a week after being hired due to domestic abuse charges. Pitt donations crumble. Jerk Of The Year - Steve Pederson.
The amazing thing to me is just how many worthy nominees there are. Steve Pederson? Hadn’t heard of him before today, but if what you say is true then I’d say he’s a deserving Jerk.
Is this an indicator of sports, modern society, or humanity in general? Jerks are everywhere???
Actually, I don’t find Tiger Woods to be big enough of a jerk to even compare with many others. He did nothing illegal, nor was it something that MANY other sports figures have not done or are not still doing. I’m not a fan of infidelity, don’t misunderstand me, but in my opinion the only person who deserves to call him a jerk is Elin.
The Newton Boys … Cam and Pops, for thumbing their noses at the rules (even down to Pops appearing at the championship game after he promised he wouldn’t.) They might have had the thrill of winning a supposed championship on the field and his Heisman win, but in a few years when the NCAA finally confesses that they did in fact cheat, that means nothing will happen to them but their decisions will cheat the university, his teammates, Oregon and TCU, not to mention the Heisman people.
I can see the point about Tiger’s indiscretions being outside the arena of sports directly. Indirectly, however, he capitalized on the fame and wealth his incredible talent (drive and practice) brought him to do things that he admits hurts others. He actually said his success made him feel no norms applied to him. That’s repeated over and over in sports and other fields. Ironically, his sponsors need a clean image, and he’s been dropped by a bunch. Paying by not getting paid?
Louis Suarez of Uruguay for his cheating “hand of God’ illegal arm block of a sure goal made by Ghana in the World Cup, which would have advanced them to the semi-finals.
FIFA could also be nominated for sprots jerk of the year if entities qualify, since as long as their rules stand, the concept of fair play can never be ascribed to the beautiful game.
This debical where Ghana was alowed only one penalty kick (which was blocked) for what should have been a clear goal clearly show that under FIFA rules, the game of soccer will always suck.
Dan Snyder every year he comes close; he’s on track already for 2011 with his silly lawsuit; at least he deserves a lifetime achievement award; finally gets a general manager but gives the head coach greater power-how dumb is that.

Dan Synder, owner of the Washington Redskins whose ego and ignorance are destroying a great franchise.

Pedantic nonsense alert: DiMaggio retired after the ‘51 season; he wouldn’t have been in uniform in ‘55.
But I wouldn’t hold it against anyone walking away from Marilyn Monroe. That broad set the modern standard for flakery.
Now, for a real Sports Jerk for the ’50s - or the ’60s - or the ’70s - or the ’80s - you just couldn’t top Billy Martin.
