Cats don’t need veggies or greens. They are obligate carnivores.

One Christmas, the shop where I buy dog food had these little bags of home-made dog treats that shaped and frosted to look like “Christmas Cookies.” As I was walking out of the shop with 50 pounds of dog food, the owner said, “Take a bag of goodies.” I ate the whole bag thinking “these things are terrible, but the frosting makes them eatable.” The next month, the owner asked how my dog liked his Christmas treats.

Janis is wondering what she’s going to have for dinner, and if it would sound as nice.

When I worked in grocery as a lad, I always wondered to see older ladies or men with baskets of canned cat or dog food and Listerine. Nothing else.

Cat food labels market the food to humans. If you want to know what you’re really feeding your cat, and you probably should, ignore the front of the label and read the ingredients on the back in the small print. Sometimes I have to laugh when I read the back of the can that says “Fancy Grilled Chicken Feast With Garden Vegetables” and it says "Water, Corn Gluten Meal, Vegetable Oil, Beef By-Products, Liver, Animal Fat, chemical x, chemical y, … and ten unpronounceable ingredients later… Chicken flavor, peas. My cats like tuna , liver, and some chicken or turkey, so I look for those to be one of the top ingredients. I’ve got one cat that can’t eat gluten, because it gives him diarrhea, and that rules out most of the cat foods. He has to eat grain-free dry food, and Meow Mix “Simple Servings”, which is their premium wet food and one of the few on the market without gluten.

Why would a cat want that? Made for humans who can’t afford regular human food.
