When my mother first saw palms (1950’s) she commented to my father "They sure went to alot of trouble putting those plants on top of those cement pillars ".
I have read that, because of the flow of the Gulf Stream in the northeastern Atlantic, one might see palm trees on the northern most islands off Britain. Apparently the warmer current encourages weather that is moderate enough for some semi-tropical plants.
