So having forgotten a lot of the details, does this little chat with Connie get El to look at having April through new eyes?

You can always count on someone to be unhappy and complain too. Life is no free ride.

Connie thinks she has never been jealous of Elly before? Connie is not particularly self-aware. This is why she exists. Since Connie’s first appearance in 1979 she has been jealous of Elly. It was preordained by Lynn Johnston.

This same thing happened to me. Our sons played together and when I got pregnant again she wouldn’t speak to me again. She never did have another child.

One of the things I love so much about this comic is the deep and true friendship between these women. Good friends are worth more than any fortune.

Well at least Connie is being open and honest about it and Elly is handling it really well.

There’s an obvious solution to both their dilemmas.

My sisters & I all had trouble getting pregnant. My oldest sister & I were pregnant at the same time when I miscarried. It took everything I had not to be bitter towards her, and she was gracious & sensitive to my feelings. When my other sister got pregnant, she was so concerned about my feelings (it was about 8 years after the miscarriage), so I wrote her a poem letting her know that I was OK with it. When I finally became pregnant almost 8 years later, I don’t think anyone rejoiced more (aside of my husband & me) than my sisters. Fun fact: All 3 of us had daughters when we were 38 years old!

Now, this may just be my middle-school-special-education-teacher brain going off on a tangent, but can random chance be preordained?

Getting philosophical here, I think it is absolutely critical that we not get too much of what we want. Life has to be a balance of “Yay!” with “What am I going to do?” or we haven’t really lived.

Fix yourself up, look nice for your husband. Be intimate and make the first move. It’s like the lottery – if you don’t play, you can’t win. If nothing else you should both be drawn closer to each other.

Adoption. But too many would be parents are extremely selfish and wish to have a child with at least half their DNA.

Wow. Reminds me of my mother and her sister. But they didn’t have the support and understanding and openness at the end. They still have so much tension, and it’s been almost 40 years since they were in a situation much like this one….

I’m going to be moving to The Philippines in December to get married and we’ll be raising my fiancee’s 6-year-old grandson. Just turned 60 in July and have never had kids (nor was particularly inclined to) and while I’m VERY nervous about doing right by a sweet, smart little boy who’s never had a daddy before, I’m finding myself really looking forward to the challenge.
