I have to admit, one of the biggest blows of my childhood was finding out about “non-sentient” things. . .then you grow up and read that trees communicate. . .sigh. . .
Anyone else here interested in Children’s Literature? Sophie’s Squash by Pat Zietlow Miller is a great example of a child falling in love with a vegetable. It’s not much different than the Velveteen Rabbit or Raggedy Ann except that a squash and an apple has a shelf life.
