If you want respect, get a cane. When I first started using a cane because of my gout, I started getting all kinds of respect. People opened doors for me, cars stopped to let me cross the street and people let me ahead of them in line.
Unfortunately, I’m not sure it’s so simple as a lack of respect. I fear that it is more intractable than that, as it arises from entire generations being taught that they were the center of the universe, that it is all about “them”. Respect can, IMHO, be taught, but dissuading someone from egocentricity is not so readily resolved. Regardless of the source, however, I agree with you Aunty, it’s pretty abysmal, especially on our roads and on the internet, where a certain amount of anonymity allows people to be their worst.
Uh. . .I LUV you, Aunty, but . . . Actually, it IS hard being perfect, but somebody has to do it! (I’m working on being just like you. . .perfectly cantankerous. Right now, I’m just “practically perfect” . . .in every way!)
Destruction of a well -functioning family is the main problem which turns out frustrated, angry, and aimless kids. As a teacher – I saw it first hand and could tell you which ones had a supportive and nurturing home life vs those that didn’t.

I’m pretty sure a lot of people were raised by wolves.

The example is set from the very top itself. Do unto others before others can do unto you.

That comes from seeing people as “others”, and not respecting the fact we are all the same.
