A couple of years ago, I thought I was going to have to spend a month or more alone in an almost empty house with no internet, newspaper,or TV… and probably no cell signal.
I thought it would be fun to have magazines… so I bought a discounted bag of three so-called “women’s” titles at Costco, none of which I’d looked at in probably 20 years.
Women’s Day, Good Housekeeping…. can’t remember the other.
Turned out I was only there for a few days, and they came home with me unread.
They are nothing like they were when I was young, or even in the 1990’s.
Almost no content… mostly ads. No fiction, no opinions or interesting bios. No in-depth information at all.
The articles are a page or two long, mostly pictures… and feature mostly women I’ve never heard of.
Even the recipes are short… and weird, with a lot of shortcuts using prepared food.
What do I care about one page of silly “laundry hacks” or “lunch-packing tips” from some 30-ish year old TV actress I’ve never seen?
One had an article about “Fabulous older women”… or something like that.
They were almost all about 50!
I think I skimmed two and then left all three at the doctor’s office.
There are still magazines that are not controlled by Apple Corp? I used to have a subscription to Texture and read various magazines. Now Apple has a monopoly on most of the digital magazines if not all. Apple tried to buy the LA Times, The New York Times and others. Most refused.
His list from yesterday is mostly what I’ve read the last 50 years, cars, motorcycles, guitars, technology, and I’ll add cooking. Those don’t seem to have changed a whole lot over the years except some strange, exotic ingredients and combinations in the recipes.

There’s no way I’d pay the price listed in the front of my magazines.

Nothing’s ever as much fun as it was when you were young.

It’s the same feeling I get watching ANY music award show. Who are theses people?

magazines & music awards are just more indications that the world is leaving the older folk behind,
as it should be; as it must.
But it can be jarring upon realization

I subscribe to Harper’s Magazine. About $25/yr. Newsstand price? $7.99. Insane.

They’re the celebrities who you’ve never heard of, who are much younger than you, and are dying of old age.

Which is why I only read magazines about fast cars and firearms. Less depressing and better pictures.
