It’s not so much that Gilbert dislikes Stanley as it is that he wants Mildred for himself.

Sit in it Stanley, and let him pull you up to where you can punch him in the nose.

Step in it, fall, claim major injuries, sue Gilbert for a bundle. Sheesh, did we not teach you anything?

I never get tired on Ballard street

Stanley married well.

Stanley considers his track record of having stepped in it all his life…

He knows he shouldn’t. He knows what will happen.

And still it’s tempting.

Do you expect him to hop over it?

Gilbert has been reading about “the art of guerilla warfare,” and is very anxious to try out some of the gizmos and gadgets used by its various practitioners over the centuries.

Stanley suddenly remembers it was the exact same method Mildred had used to draw his attention many years ago…

Everyone is tired of Gilbert’s practical jokes. What once was funny now falls flat.
