You will note that even Popeye never ate spinach until he absolutely had to.

For anyone missing it: E. C. Segar created the strip Thimble Theatre. It became a continuity strip with Castor Oyl as the main character. (His family included his sister Olive.) A few years into the strip a character called Popeye was introduced and most of the original cast gradually eased out. Popeye was licensed to the Fleischer brothers for cartoons and ’lo this strip was born.

“The Segar St. Market”? Nice reference! Elzie C. Segar created Popeye in 1929.
