I can see asking about the lying/joking thing, but “Are you an idiot” has got to cross some legal line. He needs to run that question past HR just to be on the safe side.
I suppose I would have said, “First, lose the attitude. Second, what did I do that constituted screwing up idiotically?” If the answer was unenlightening, I would punch him between the eyes. (I could just quit, but that wouldn’t be as satisfying.)
