In reality dogs don’t understand meanings of words. They understand commands because they are able to associate those words with actions and rewards.
When we had our dog she used to make all kinds of sounds to us and we had to discern what she was after, and I joked that we learned to understand her language, but she didn’t understand a word we said to her in ours…
