Grant Wood taught art at my husband’s high school in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The male model was Grant Wood’s dentist and the female model was Grant Wood’s sister.
Following a disagreement Mabel told Horace what he could do with that pitchfork. The look on his face plainly shows he wasn’t thrilled with her suggestion.
“O.K., so where the HELL are all those Subsidies that trump promised us after killing our export business? He better not show up here, because I’ll show him EXACTLY where I can put this pitchfork!!”

The name “American Gothic” refers to the window on top floor of the house. Grant Wood thought it was strange, and somewhat pretentious, that a simple wooden house in Iowa would have a gothic window.
