Its parents like him that cause youth sports to lose many good referees. I’ve refereed High School Volleyball for 7 years and this behavior has gotten so bad, that I, along with many others are debating whether or not to continue. It’s not just the parents, but the players and some coaches that have gotten out of hand. Most of us do it because we love the sport and enjoy the kids… but not so much anymore.

I have four sons and all of them played baseball. Over the years there were some rowdy parents but only one time where a parent was thrown out. As they grew up, three of my kids ended up playing for the same coaches and I ran the book for the team. One night with son #4, we were playing another team whose two coaches also happened to coach my son’s CYO team. Having had four kids play in the Little League program for 18 consecutive years, I knew a good percentage of the parents. We had one of the best kids in the league on our team but a kid who didn’t always contain his emotions. His dad, Alan, an ex-Navy Seal, had a quiet voice but one that carried a distance. I don’t remember what started the incident but the assistant coach on the other team was a guy named Kyle who had been the fitst college football player to forego his senior year to enter the NFL draft early. Kyle was arguing something with an umpire and Alan said something, just aloud enough to be heard about Kyle growing up. Kyle yelled out “hey, man, why don’t you just pull down your pants?” Without missing a beat, Alan yelled back “if I did, I’d probably find your wife there.” As he said this, I happened to be walking over to the other dugout in front of the other sides’ stands to tell them of a position change. I couldn’t help but look at Kathy, Kyle’s ex-model wife, who was absoluteluy moritfied by the exchange. Both Alan and Kyle got tossed as the ten to twelve year -old players were trying to figure out what they had just heard. I always wondered whether the ex-Seal of the ex-football star would have won a fight. if it had broken out.
