Ronco was an American company that manufactured and sold a variety of items and devices, most commonly those used in the kitchen. Ron Popeil founded the company in 1964,1 and infomercials and commercials for the company’s products soon became pervasive and memorable, in part thanks to Popeil’s personal sales pitches. The names “Ronco” and “Popeil” and the suffix “-O-Matic” (used in many early product names) became icons of American popular culture and were often referred to by comedians introducing fictional gadgets, and As-Seen-On-TV parodies.
When I was little, we had the elf figure, but my parents never moved it around and said it was watching me. Is this a newish thing? Anyway, I’m glad they didn’t. It would have generated yet another neurosis I’d have have to deal with in adulthood.
Besides…the elf was too busy duking it out in a Texas steel cage match with Christmas Snoopy.
In spite of the scissors and tape, I feel certain that Eva Rose is opening the Ronco Pocket Mortician (“It slices! It dices!”), and I am further surmising that it was Lio’s secret gift to her. Hence, our happy voyeur/Elf on a Shelf.
What I really would like to see, however, is what Eva Rose does when she sees him (as she surely will, sooner or later)….

It looks like Eva is wrapping the present, not opening it. Who would she be giving that to?

She’s keeping the Chop-o-Matic for herself. I shudder to think of what she’s going to do with it.
