`Per Tim Allen, I made my feeder only about a foot off of the ground. Combination bird, squirrel and cat feeder. (You want to see reel fighting? Put up a hummingbird feeder. Those little buggers are VICIOUS!)
Just last week, a pretty good fist fight broke out in the parking Lot at my gym, over a “close” slot. The irony was that there were plenty of spaces a little farther away and both guys put in a lot of treadmill time. Go figure.
I had a bird feeder with a squirrel on one side and a blue jay come flying in from the other. They scared to poop out of each other and then the feeder was empty.
It would be nice if the birds bothered the dang squirrels. Maybe, the humans wouldn’t have so much trouble dealing with those rats with fluffy tails. Bird seed costs as much per pound as a decent cut of beef. Right now, I’m using Cole’s Screaming Squirrel Sauce, a hot pepper oil mix, which only bothers mammals. It really works, but again, it’s expensive. But, heck, I’m surrounded by twenty acres of woods, and I really hate squirrels.
My mom has one of those powered “Yankee Flipper” bird feeders where the perch rotates & flings off any squirrel or other critter heavier than a bird. We’ve never seen it actually fling a squirrel IRL (only on video – it’s a hoot!), but once they’ve set a paw on the perch & been startled by the movement, they generally leave it alone.
OTOH, it doesn’t stop the deer from doing the “anteater thing,” sticking their tongues in the holes & pulling them out covered in seeds! Even hot sauce doesn’t seem to stop them for long…

This is true! I have watched birds go through the pecking order…the woodpeckers chase the others off while the others wait their turn.

We used to have a bird feeder, but the only one who got fat was the cat.

Wild birds unlimited has an answer for keeping squirrels off and raccoons if needed. Works great!

I thought Wheeler was a raptor.
