I honestly sort of understand Calvin here. “No, you may not go sledding or running or playing. You have to trudge along sloooooowly like us for an hour, and if we try and talk, it’s going to be about confusing adult things that we’ll make fun of you for not fully understanding.”
Poooor Calvin! He has nothing to compare his situation to. I can personally tell him walking in the snow, as a family, is a lot better than sitting in the house, watching your parents drain a fifth of bourbon. And I know I’m not an isolated case. Count your blessings Calvin.
Except for the last two frames, this was my mindset as I was snow blowing the driveway this morning. I usually don’t partake before noon, but that Saranac Pale Ale helped!
The parents probably would have had less trouble with Calvin, if the entire family went sledding and took Hobbes along. That would have been a treat to read in the strip. Can’t you see it now?
I used to take pictures of my wife after a long “walk in the snow” to remind her of how miserable she was, to show to her the next time she wanted to go. In retrospect, that was pretty mean. I should have let her enjoy the pleasures before the pain.
I occurred to me that they could have had a family day tobogganing. The exercise of climbing up the hill after the exileration of the slide, would appeal to any kid more than the pointless stroll.
The Dr. Zhivago reference was awesome, laughed so hard,, it was perfect. And, yes, Calvin may only be, what, 6? well, he is a cartoon character and who knows what knowledge is stored in his fake head? Calvin justifies my reason for never having kids,, lmaoooooooooooo

Going for a walk in the snow? Who is so in need of character as to acquire it that way?
Bilan about 5 years ago
Calvin was right, it was a miserable walk. Just not for him.

Last week, someone commented that when Calvin has fun with Dad, he doesn’t need Hobbes. This week’s Sunday strip is the reversal of that.
cubswin2016 about 5 years ago
I suppose it would build character if someone dropped an anvil on Dad’s head. Let’s find out.

… in spite of all the griping, Mom will still make Calvin hot chocolate when he is finished sledding.

Saw this coming from panel #1. It’s not like Calvin isn’t always out in the snow every chance he gets. Much to Susie’s dismay.

I thought the worst day of his life was fishing in the rain.

sorry. I have no clever comment. Just that this was a funny strip and so realistic.

My kid does the same when we take him out for a walk. And he can spend the entire day outside with his friends.
