Boy, this strip is old. I had to look up that Joe guy, since I’ve never heard of him. Apparently, he’s Charlie Brown’s favorite baseball player and like all Peanuts adults, he’s neither seen, nor heard.
Curiously, the name Joseph Shlabotnik first appeared in Peanuts in 1957 as a fictional piano player invented by Schroeder. The first appearance of the name as a baseball player was in 1963.

Were you expecting Hank Aaron or someone else from the Major League, Peppermint Patty?

At least he was drafted. There were probably players that didn’t even get that far.

Baseball is “a unique paragon of American culture”. Not for a European.

Interesting how Linus makes a not-so-good player sound like he’s a Hall of Fame player!

Does it matter? He’s Charlie’s hero.

Remember that Joe Shlabotnik also served for ONE GAME as the manager of a team… he was fired for calling for a squeeze play with no one on base :-P

Say what you will about ol’ Joe, but how many of us ever inked a contract to play ball for money? …

I make a pretty good guest speaker. Until they haul me away.

Joe will probably get lost, be late, etc.

Great observation Linus. Except the minors do not draft players. The majors draft players and then send them to the minors to develop them.

How sarcastic can you be Patty?

Yup, she’s heard of him. And her comment in the last panel shows exactly how bad he is. Perfect for Charlie Brown’s testimonial dinner.
