Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman tackled this during one episode of Mythbusters, trying to figure out exactly why these 2 ingredients reacted the way they did. I can’t remember if they ever figured it out. Which is OK. There are lots of things science doesn’t have the answers to (yet), and scientists are perfectly cool with saying “we don’t know”; that’s an honest answer, and way better than just making something up.
