The story was an allegory: the Tin Man was Industry – which doesn’t have a heart; the Scarecrow was Farmers – who don’t have brains (but we’re thankful they do that job anyway); The Cowardly Lion was Politicians – who don’t have the courage to do the right thing… etc. etc. …and the Emerald City only appeared that way because the residents were forced to wear emerald colored glasses.
