I see from “Meet Your Creator” below that Brian Basset’s father was a cartoonist rather than a rocket scientist like Red’s father. It might have been a good idea to make Red’s father a cartoonist and comment on comic strips within this comic strip. However, making his father a rocket scientist and having Red fantasise about space travel also works very well.

Jon Davis originally made Garfield’s owner Jon Arbuckle a cartoonist. He introduced himself to us as a cartoonist in the first Garfield strip back in 1978. As far as I know, there has only been one more Garfield strip which has referenced this so Davis obviously didn’t develop the idea.

Growing up we had a dog. When she was a puppy, she used to walk on her hind legs more often than on all fours.

The last panel is hilarious.
