My wife works with State Department refugees. They come from a swath of the world from Central Africa, through the Middle East and on into Southeast Asia.
She has to deal with multiple languages from Arabic to Swahili. Fortunately, she has interpreters available to her.
The apartment complex that acts as transitional housing until these refugees get settled (number 1 priority: learn English, 2: get a job, 3: become a citizen). has a makeshift soccer field.
All the kids play soccer even though there may be more languages being spoken on the field than is heard at the United Nations.
The kids pick up English almost immediately even the idioms. My wife asked one kid if he could interpret a question for his mother. He responded enthusiastically, “I got this!” and went on to translate.

Did I miss the introduction of Leo’s “magic hood” ? I don’t recall seeing it before.
