so true. 1960’s.. its not easy to learn.. when you are trying to avoid being killed by other students. stabbed twice in Junior high school. ( race issues ) and no better today.
I did some summer classes for elementary students. I’d tell them that my regular job is not to teach. But they are students, so their job is to learn. So if they don’t learn, they’re not doing their job.
Very good today. A very good variations on the usual themes. Most often one hears – It’s the teacher’s fault. He or she doesn’t like me.Why do I have to go to school anyway. So what I failed the test. I’ll never use this stuff anyway. The variations are endless – and useless, but they have persisted through many generations and will for many more.
Many school districts believe that lie to such an extent that teachers, administrators and even stupidintendents correct answers on the tests and other breaches of ethics.
As a college student I quickly learned who were the best teachers, and made sure to take their classes. They tended to test on the lecture content. The poorer teachers assigned reading material, never discussed it in class and then gave tests on obscure parts of it.
On the other hand, as a private tutor, I have had to correct the poor learning habits of high school students because they were never taught the basics of a subject in lower grades, especially in math and the physical sciences.
Standardized tests ARE given to test the teachers.
The best thing parents can do for their children is provide an environment that encourages learning and respect for teachers.
Reminds me of an old, old Archie comic where Jughead refuses to study for an upcoming test and convinces Mrs. Grundy it will be her fault as a teacher if he fails. Mrs. G becomes so upset she is ready to resign, until the test results are posted. Jughead aces the exam! “See, Mrs G. I had faith in you…!”
Old, old joke from an old, old joke book: The kid tells the teacher, “I don’t want to scare you, but my pop said if my grades don’t improve, someone’s in for a whipping.”

This would be funny if it wasn’t an attitude shared by State Education Depts.
