My wife uses a wheelchair. Our parking spot outside our apartment is located such that she has to drive into a pile of mulch when she drives out of our van (wheelchair ramp installed) so, as you might imagine, she picks up quite a bit of mud when it rains. Fortunately, it’s about 25 feet down the sidewalk from there to our front door, generally enough time for most of it to come off, leaving tire tracks in her wake.
My husband just cleaned the carpets and commented that he really picked up a lot of dirt. I’d imagine so since 2 of the 3 of us never remove their "shoes"when they come in-my husband and the dog.
We always walked ours and wiped their feet when needed before coming in, along with their fur if it was raining or back east snowing. They knew when they went out I’d wipe their feet so they would stop and I would grab the towel from inside the door and wipe and then they went inside.
That’s why my dogs go through the door into the mud/laundry room. If their feet are muddy, I can wipe them off. That is where we take are shoes off before going into the rest of the house.

You can have a house that looks ready for the House Beautiful photographer or you can have pets/kids. Your choice.
