I am glad to see that her teacher is welcoming towards non-traditional literature. In general, I’m glad to see that for the most part, we’re past the age of classic literature snobbery in schools. It is important that we have an understanding of how we got to where we are, but classic literature shouldn’t be the “only option”.
I used to volunteer in an elementary school library. At the beginning of the older kids’ classes the librarian would let kids talk about the books they were reading.
Many times it was obvious that the kid hadn’t read the book. They’d say they finished it last night but can’t remember any of the character names. Often the only plot details they remember are from the first chapter.
