Don’t Montessori schools have areas where kids can go to just chill or fart around whenever they feel like it? The idea that all kids have their bursts of energy land at exactly 10 AM or 1:30 PM, so that’s when ALL of them need recess just doesn’t mesh with reality.
My kindergarten teacher was appalled the first time I stood up and walked across the classroom during a lecture. She took to letting me alone do so, which didn’t help my popularity.
My sixth-grade teacher used to tell misbehaving boys to run a lap around the schoolhouse. Try that today and you’d have to pack the kid a lunch. In some schools, a tent and a sleeping bag.
Frazz17 hrs · There are few things that cannot be improved by a nice walk. Occasionally, someone else’s walk. My dog, of course, is a firm believer in the value of someone else’s walk combined with her own. Someone else with opposable thumbs and access to baggies. We know who’s in charge.

There’s a reason we had two “physical activity” sessions in our half-day kindergarten when I was a kid. And a nap.

That’s why schools have / had both physical education and recess. Kids need to be active.
