I had the opposite experience once when a bird was flying alongside my car, pacing me, as I drove past a park. At one point he decided the game was over and grabbed the top of a passing post, coming to a smooth stop without so much as a wobble back and forth. If I’d had cards with numbers on them in the car with me I would have held them up.
I like Maurice’s name. I’ve named the ruffled grouse who feeds off the berries of the two crabapple trees out of my kitchen window, Homer. He shows up every fall and winter. Don’t see him in the summer.
Maurice coming in for a landing reminds me of some of the aircraft carrier landings during WW2 that were not so graceful; some of them ended up like Maurice.
The ones in my driveway this morning were even slower to cross than the turkeys usually are. Why were you late? I was waiting for the geese to cross the driveway.

Ever see a puffin land? Always funny. I used to live by a pond where Canada Geese would try to land on ice – hysterical.

Well compared to the Gooney Birds it’s not bad at all.

The character “Loon” from the comic strip “Shoe” is another bird with weak aeronautical skills.
