The Viking reputation for savagery is well-earned, but they were also great traders. Their long boats were not only capable of open ocean travel, they could also navigate many rivers far inland (for example Paris). Their “empire” extended from Russia to North America to the Middle East.
My background is partly Norse. Way back when there was a large influx of young male tourists from Scandinavia: they came for the plunder and stayed for the women. Many Vikings assimilated into the cultures they either raided or traded with.
